The Lavra is not a museum behind glass — it is Russia’s most important working monastery, founded by Sergius of Radonezh almost seven centuries ago. Inside the walls, Russian stone architecture unfolds from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century: the Baroque Smolensk Church, the tomb of Boris Godunov, the palace built for Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich and more than fifty other buildings. Trinity Cathedral
The Trinity Cathedral
The Trinity Cathedral is where the monastery began in stone — the oldest surviving building of the Lavra and a key monument of early Moscow architecture. Andrei Rublev painted his Trinity for this church — and since 2024 the original icon is back in this cathedral. Pilgrims still queue by the shrine of St Sergius at the south wall; ten narrow windows in the dome fill the small white church with soft, even light.
Assumption Cathedral & Bell Tower
The Assumption Cathedral
You recognise the Assumption Cathedral at once: the largest church of the Lavra deliberately echoes its Kremlin namesake — four star-spangled blue domes around a golden one. Ivan the Terrible commissioned it; the Godunov family tomb stands by its wall. Inside, a carved gilded iconostasis rises the full height of the church, and when the monks sing from the upper galleries, parishioners say the voices come “as if from heaven”.
The Bell Tower
The Bell Tower rises 88 metres — seven more than Ivan the Great in the Moscow Kremlin. It was planned with three tiers; the engineers found it could carry five — and thanks to that extra height the Lavra greets you from the road, long before you reach the walls.

The museum and the matryoshka
Sergiev Posad is also the town where the matryoshka became Russian folk art: the toy trade settled here more than a century ago, and the local History and Art Museum keeps over 110,000 objects — icons, medieval embroidery, manuscripts and folk toys — in four buildings within walking distance of each other. An optional stop when the day allows.
