The gallery began as one man's private collection: Pavel Tretyakov bought paintings for almost forty years and gave the whole house to Moscow in 1892. The fairy-tale façade came later, drawn by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov, whose own canvases hang inside.

Meeting · The icon halls
Start in the oldest rooms: icons from the twelfth century onward. The guide shows how everything painted later in this building grows out of them.
The nineteenth century
The rooms where Russian painting found its subjects: Repin's history, Surikov's crowds, portraits of writers you have read. Ivanov's enormous «Appearance of Christ Before the People» has a hall of its own, with the studies that took him twenty years hanging around it.
The turn of the century
Finish with Vrubel's Demon, Serov's portraits and the rooms where the twentieth century begins. If the avant-garde is what you came for, that is the New Tretyakov on Krymsky Val — a separate building and a separate visit we can plan instead.

Before you book the Tretyakov route
Is this the museum with the Black Square?
No — Malevich's Black Square hangs at the New Tretyakov on Krymsky Val, the modern-art branch. This route covers the historic building in Lavrushinsky Lane: icons to the early twentieth century. If the avant-garde is your priority, tell us and we will plan that visit instead.
Where is Rublev's Trinity?
The Trinity left the gallery in 2023 and is now kept in the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra — the monastery our Sergiev Posad day trip visits. The icon halls remain among the deepest in the world — the guide shows what makes them so on the day.
Are tickets included?
Timed entry and museum-guiding arrangements are confirmed in your quotation. Nothing is treated as included until it appears there.
Is three hours enough?
For an edited route, yes. If you would rather sit with fewer rooms for longer, say so: three hours with fewer rooms is a good visit too.
Can we take photographs?
